Why armed self-defense training?
When I was in the military, one of the most common complaints I heard from our Army counterparts was training. Not that they were doing too much but too little. This was during the time that I got to experience what too much firearms training felt like. My thumbs would hurt from reloading magazines; I was tired of throwing flashbangs, and grenades. Then I deployed for the first time in 2005.
Then I realized why training was so important.
I have reloaded my firearm without thinking about it. It kept my head up and in the fight. These situations don’t have a one-to-one correlation with self-defense shooting but they’re related. Most self-defense situations happen really close and they are over “quickly,” though it may feel like an eternity. Generally, there aren’t sustained firefights in the civilian world but the process remains the same.
Just like any other training, you learn the technique, practice it, and stress it. A lot of people spend time at the range and are great at hitting stationary targets, some at impressive distances. Marksmanship is incredibly important but it’s not the only topic that you need to cover when discussing self-defense shooting. There are moving targets, seeking cover, engagement at close distances, and attire, to name a few issues, to consider when carrying.
Lastly, firearm training is another toolset. Within that toolset are more techniques to learn and practice. Learning self-defense shooting just gives you more options in a scenario we hope you never find yourself in.
